Size:

12–14" (30–36 cm)

Male:

Small and brown with a black chin and fluffy white patch beneath the tail. Black ring around a thick, chicken-like, ivory bill. Winter bill is brown and unmarked.

Female:

same as male

Juvenile:

paler than adults, with white spots and a gray chest, belly and bill

Nest:

floating platform; female and male build; 1 brood per year

Eggs:

5–7; bluish white without markings
